An extended bank holiday? Now that’s worth celebrating!

This year's Jubilee celebration is hopefully going to be a big one, with a new report indicating that UK STR (short-term rental) reservation volume is up 124%.

The celebration, taking place from 2-5 June, marks the 70-year reign of Queen Elizabeth II and will see the UK granted an extra bank holiday date. However, this may not the only cause of celebrations for the hospitality sector, as in its latest data pull, property management platform Guesty found that UK short-term reservations were 124% higher than this time last year.

The Platinum Jubilee could potentially be a boom for the hospitality sector," said Paul Brown, Beacon Managing Director. "Not only are Britons taking advantage of the extra day off to travel domestically, but Royal fans from all over the world are set to come to the UK to celebrate this momentous occasion."

Average nightly rates countrywide are £220 per night, a 15% increase from 2021 and a 58% increase from 2019. Unfortunately, the report also showed that reservation volume for the UK’s Early May Bank Holiday (2 May 2022) was down -12% on 2021 (1 May 2021) and down -22% on 2019 (6 May 2019). So, we’re keeping our fingers crossed that the outlook for this next one continues to look positive.

"The Jubilee is a perfect opportunity for the UK to show off its world-class hospitality," Paul Brown added. "With so many people coming to visit, it's crucial that property owners and managers are prepared for the influx of guests."

However, with just a few weeks until this auspicious occasion, are you fully prepped to maximise your profits from the potential increase in customer traffic? If not, don't worry - we've got you covered. Check out our top tips for making the most of the Jubilee below.

First and foremost, it's important to make sure your staff are well-trained and prepared for any spike in demand. Extended licensing hours mean longer days and more business, so your team will need to be up for the challenge! Make sure everyone knows their roles and responsibilities, and that they understand the importance of providing excellent customer service. If your staff need a quick refresher, or your team is new to the sector, then Direction Training offer some fantastic online courses that are endorsed by the Institute of Hospitality and contribute to your employee’s PDP. Plus, as a Beacon customer, you get an exclusive discount off their modules, which start from as little as £6 per licence.

In addition, you'll need to make sure your premises are in tip-top condition and up to scratch. This is especially important if you're expecting visitors from out of town. First impressions count, so take the time to give your property a clean and make any necessary repairs. If you have any outdoor areas, now is the time to spruce them up too - after all, the weather is (fingers crossed) set to be good!

Beacon has a whole host of suppliers who can help you revitalise and refresh both your indoor and outdoor spaces. Dulux Decorator Centre offers a wide variety of decorative and functional wall coatings and decorator tools, and Screwfix can provide everything from power tools and work wear to cables and pipe fittings. If it’s new outdoor furniture that you’re after, then Moda Furnishings have a specialist commercial range that will transform your outdoor areas into inviting and comfortable spaces that are so comfortable and luxurious that your customers won’t want to leave.

Finally, don't forget the all-important finishing touches. Now is the time to put up any Union Jack flags, bunting or other patriotic decorations to mark this historic event. New Beacon supplier Nisbets has a Jubilee mini site featuring everything from eco-friendly consumables, through to janitorial supplies for the post-party clean-up. Plus, as a Beacon customer you can take advantage of some exclusive enhanced online discounts on top of their already low, low prices.

If you really want to go all out, why not consider a special Jubilee menu or offer? Your guests will appreciate the effort, and it's a great way to boost business.
