Do you know what your business’s Water Footprint is?

Did you know that 97% of the water on Earth is salty? Just over 2% is locked in polar ice caps and less than 1% is available as freshwater – the water that we drink and use to grow food. As the world’s population increases this limited resource will be in greater demand than ever.

Water usage has grown at more than twice the rate of population increase in the last century and it’s estimated that by 2025 around 1.8 billion people will be living in areas plagued by water scarcity, and at least two-thirds of the world’s population will live in water stressed regions.

Water is a crucial resource for every business, but how many businesses understand how much water they use? The Water Footprint, created by the Water Footprint Network, was designed to help businesses understand the total amount of freshwater consumed to produce the goods and services they provide. Businesses that understand their Water Footprint can use this information to help drive strategic action towards sustainable and efficient water use.

When water supplies are limited efficient and effective water management is important. There are a number of ways that businesses (and individuals) can get involved to help manage water scarcity, these include: water conservation, sustainable water use and recycling water.
