Top seafood tips from Direct Seafoods for August

As August creeps closer and sea temperatures continue to rise around the UK, summer season fish are still moving through and boat activity is high - pulling in the best quality fish of the year. Read on to find out more...

Sardines are late this year and pickings are slim from Black Bream and Grey Mullet. Larger boats continue to target Scallops and Prawns, particularly in Scotland and South West. Some shellfish are struggling with shelf life like Mussels, Clams and Cockles. Native Lobsters are really active and showing well and there are plenty of great fish options in the last of the summer months. Why not update your later summer menu and be mindful of seasonality for your specials boards?

Top tips for August

Sea Reared Trout - Origin Norway
This is in prime condition as a great summer fish , delicate in flavour and stunning in colour. This is a great value menu option versus Wild Sea Trout and remains a top pick from the Direct Seafood Buying Team.

Hake - Origins Scotland, North East Atlantic, South west
This tidal species continues in abundance and looks set to continue through the summer period as the tides settle down. Therefore Hake remains a buyers tip for the month of August, some great bargains to be had here!

Mackerel - Origins Scotland, South West, Spain, Portugal and France
We are seeing more landings on the south coast each week of beautiful line caught Mackerel, along with good Scottish supply. It should be a strong pick again for August and beyond due to the late season.

Sardines - Origin Portugal, Spain, South west, Scotland
This is the latest season for a while on Sardines, south west catches are now being landed, so the talk with fishermen is that it will be a bumper month in August, driving great pricing at market.
