Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and the banning of R22

From the 1st of January 2015 it will be illegal to use the refrigerant gas R22 in refrigeration, heat pump and air conditioning systems. R22 is commonly used in Air Conditioning systems pre-dating 2004.

In order to be compliant you will have to:

  • Option 1: replaced your system for a new Air Conditioning equipment
  • Option 2: use an alternative refrigerant to top up your system. This will normally involve having to replace parts of the current Air Conditioning system. However most manufactures claim that using an alternative refrigerant can lead to poorer equipment performance and higher energy costs.

Companies will be breaking the law and will face site shut down and/or fines if they are not compliant with the new regulations. Therefore, replacing R22 air conditioning systems with modern alternatives will be essential.
