Beacon annouce the best English breakfast winners

A 17th-century country inn in Yorkshire boasting only eleven rooms has been judged the winner of the Best English Breakfast competition sponsored by Beacon Purchasing in conjunction with Visit Britain, Unilever and Kellogg’s.

A 17th-century country inn in Yorkshire boasting only eleven rooms has been judged the winner of the Best English Breakfast competition sponsored by Beacon Purchasing in conjunction with Visit Britain, Unilever and Kellogg’s.

The Shibden Mill Inn in Halifax, already renowned for its pub lunches, can now add a citation for serving the Best English Breakfast based on such comprehensive criteria as quality and provenance of food, choice of brands, service, presentation and ambience.

Describing the Shibden Mill’s breakfast offering, Rob Adams, Group Sales Manager of the Caterer Group and one of the judges, said, ‘ We liked the large variety of locally sourced produce combined with the quality brands offered by the Shibden Mill Inn. The sensibly priced and varied breakfast menu with healthy options offers something for everyone. Details of the ingredients’ provenance were clearly evident and this all combined to make it a worthy winner.’

Hazel Tunnicliffe, Beacon Marketing Manager, said, ‘We were delighted by the number and calibre of the entries. It just proves that the first meal of the day is now a very significant product and service offering and could actually form part of a hospitality establishment’s USP. We hope this will encourage others to drive forward their breakfast business!’

The competition also saw four hotels and B&Bs in the English regions scooping up runner-up prizes: North Moreton House in Didcot, which came in second; The Best Western Ambleside Salutation Hotel, which came in third; and The Waterhead Hotel in Ambleside and The Old Rectory at Brosely, Shropshire, which came in fourth and fifth, respectively.

As part of its prize, Shibden Mill Inn wins a free one-year Beacon membership worth £495 and an Apple iPad.
