Beacon talks to Steven Wells about industry challenges and how Beacon membership has benefited his business


Steven Wells is the Director of the Garden Isle Hotel Group, looking after two family run 3* establishments, Melville Hall Hotel and the Luccombe Hall Country House Hotel on the Isle of Wight.

Melville Hall nestles in the quiet semi-rural outskirts of Sandown, a few minutes walk from the seafront, cliff walks and shops. The hotel offers spa facilities with beauty rooms and indoor and outdoor pools. Their 30 bedrooms offer plentiful accessories and many have Jacuzzi baths. They also have an entire day spa based in the hotel with a suite of treatment rooms including a New York style nail bar.

Luccombe Hall Country House Hotel is appropriately described as ‘the view with the hotel’ and was originally built in 1870 as a summer home for the Bishop of Portsmouth. Enjoying an impressive cliff-top location, the hotel boasts fantastic panoramic sea views, delightful gardens and direct access to the beach. The 29 well equipped bedrooms are comfortably furnished and there is a range of leisure facilities.

How long have you been a member of the AA?
Both hotels have been members of the AA for over 20 years.

What do you think are the key challenges facing businesses in the Hotel industry?
It has to be meeting guest expectations whilst trying to make a profit!

How did becoming a member of Beacon help you with these challenges?
Beacon suppliers are all quality vetted and the purchasing power enables discounts which would otherwise be unavailable to small and medium sized businesses or independents. This allows us to really concentrate on meeting the needs of our guests and ensuring they have a pleasant stay.

What do you purchase through Beacon?
As much as possible! We are constantly price watching and there are very few occasions when we are able to obtain the same supplies at better prices than Beacon. The suppliers we use are Gilchrist and Soames for toiletries, Matthew Clark and Waverley for liquor and soft drinks, Stalbridge for linen, Mitre Furnishings, Screwfix and Wolseley.

How does being a Beacon member help in the day-to-day running of your property?
The supplier listings in the supplier directory, the Source, are exceptionally helpful. No more searching for suppliers contact numbers on the internet – all are categorised for us. The service quality is also second to none, no matter what you are ordering it is always in stock and swiftly delivered.

What aspects of membership are the most beneficial to you?
Obviously the cost savings, closely followed by quality assurance from Beacon approved suppliers. The Powerpoints we earn also help reduce our overall costs!

What else would you like to see from Beacon?
Possibly professional personnel guidance or Health and Safety advice or marketing assistance – something similar to Natwest Mentor Services.
